Transport Unit

Is the unit under Directorate of Logistics and Operations dealing with transportation of health commodities from MSD HQ to MSD ten (10) zones. The unit have 215 vehicles of different which ensure MSD functions of distribution is achieved by deliver the goods at the right place, right time and right quality.

HOW UNIT WORKS - All Warehouses submitting to Transport Unit their transport request of the week by filling transport request form which shows the capacity of Vehicles required, loading date and destination point (zone). The Transport Officers allocate required vehicles based on request. Drivers report to the loading bay after been assigned and load the commodities as assigned ready to go to the respective zones.

OUR CUSTOMER AND SERVICES - Transport unit serves MSD HQ, zones and customers. Also vehicles are hired by other Government Institution to distribute special commodities when needed.

Transport Unit customer’s satisfaction rate range from 95 to 100%, this shows that distribution functions are strengthened and vehicles are full utilized.

 

SUCCESS

i. To reduce accidents caused - The Unit succeed to install   Fleet Management system to monitor   vehicles and driving behavior of drivers   in transit hence reducing the number of accidents that may increase cost to institution and fuel costs.

ii. To ensure quality of health commodities maintained - Temperature management system   installed in the vehicles for monitoring temperature of  health commodities loaded  into the vehicles to  ensure are transported at recommended temperature to facilities hence reduce quality damages of the Commodities.

iii. Improve Fleet Utilization - Vehicles inspection, minor repair and vehicle maintenance and services are performed in  MSD workshop to avoid idle time of vehicles that may cause delay in distribution activities hence causing stockout  of health commodities at facilities.

Medical Stores Department (MSD) was established by the Act of Parliament No.13 of 1993 as an autonomous department under the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children responsible for developing, maintaining and managing an efficient and cost effective system of procurement, storage and distribution of approved medicines and medical supplies required for use by all public health facilities.
