Mtwara Zone
Mtwara zones was established in 1994,serving two regions, Mtwara and Lindi, and Tunduru District, located in the Ruvuma Region. Mtwara Zone serves 664 Customers from 2 Regions (Mtwara &Lindi) and Tunduru District. There are a total of 16 councils. 9 for Mtwara,6 for Lindi and 1 for Tunduru. Mtwara zone Customers include one Southern Zonal Referral Hospital, two Regional Referral Hospitals, 15 District Hospitals, one District Designated Hospital, onedesignated referral hospital at the regional level,70 Health Centres, 553 Dispensaries, 21Faith-Based Organizations(FBOs), and 50 other facilities (Education, military, etc.)
Like other zones, the Mtwara zone operates under the directorate of logistics and operations. In the financial year 2013/2014, it was transformed into Strategic Business Unit (SBU). Mtwara SBU has about twenty-nine (29) staff. The SBU’s volume of activities has increased due to the number of facilities and the expansion and renovation of health facilities, which have increased the volume and variety of commodity demand, increasing the SBU's warehousing and distribution activities. The introduction of a redesigned ILS system has increased the workload and demand for additional staff in sales, warehouse, Customer services, Data clerk/records, and drivers.
MTWARA ZONESTRATEGICALLY INTENDED;
To facilitate the smooth flow of health commodities from the central warehouse to the Mtwara zone and distribute them to health facilities, zonal supply chain management was developed to ensure that all principles and necessary information flows, such as the flow of funds, the flow of commodities, and reverse logistics, are considered in carrying out its mandates.
STORAGE OF HEALTH COMMODITIES
Proper storage conditions are vital to ensuring the quality of life-saving health commodities. Product expiration dates are based on adequate storage conditions, and providing these conditions helps protect product quality and conserve resources.
Mtwara Zone stores medicines, medical supplies, and laboratory reagents in its warehouses, strategically located in the Industrial area of Port Road in Mtwara Mikindani Municipal Council. The zone has a storage facility that is958 square meters.
MSD is building a new warehouse in the Mitengo area of Mtwara Mikindani Municipal Council to address the storage challenges of receiving, picking, and dispatching items. This facility will be 4,800 square meters and feature modern, computerized technological systems.
DISTRIBUTION COVERAGE
Currently, the Mtwara zone serves 16 districts with 652 health facilities, ranging from zonal referral hospitals to dispensaries. It implements the six direct delivery cycles in all 15 district-level hospitals, one district-designated hospital, two regional referral hospitals, one designated referral hospital at the regional level, one zonal referral hospital, 553 dispensaries, 70 public health centers, nine faith-based organizations (FBOs).Additionally, it serves schools, colleges, military hospitals, and other authorized private hospitals. The number of facilities served constantly changes due to the expansion of health facilities.

Mtwara has a well-trained, well-mannered, and supportive staff dedicated to providing high-quality service to all its customer segments. Customers are divided into two groups:
- Corporate customersinclude hospitals such as Zonal Referral Hospitals, Specialized Service Hospitals, Regional Referral Hospitals, and those involved in various programs.
- Non-corporate customerscomprise Primary Health Facilities (such as dispensaries and health centers), District Hospitals registered by PO-RALG, and the Ministry of Health.
