What we do
Medical Stores Department (MSD) commenced its operations on the 1st of July 1994. The core mandates of MSD as described under The Act of Parliament No. 13 of 1993 and as amended in 2021, are Production, Procurement, Storage, and Distribution of health commodities to public health facilities and private health facilities approved by the Ministry of Health.
MSD performs its mandates by implementing the following:
- Developing, maintaining, and managing an efficient and cost-effective system of production, procurement, storage, and distribution of approved health commodities
- Applying sound commercial principles in the production, procurement, storage, and distribution of health commodities.
- Ensuring the availability in time of approved health commodities within the Public Health System
In fulfilling its highlighted mandates, MSD operates strategically through its ten (10) zonal offices located in Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Iringa, Tabora, Dodoma, Kagera, Mwanza, Kilimanjaro, Tanga, and Mtwara. Further, MSD operates Five (5) Community Outlets meant to make health commodity services closer to society.
These outlets are based in the following areas; Geita (Chato), Lindi (Ruangwa), Katavi (Mpanda), Arusha (Mount Meru), and Mbeya. MSD delivers health commodities direct to the health facilities and this very distribution is implemented after every two months.
