Director General's Note

Medical Stores Department (MSD) has served public health facilities in Tanzania for over 30 years and continues to innovate and maintain efficient, secured, and cost-effective systems of its four functions of Production, Procurement, Storage, and Distribution of health commodities to all public and other approved health facilities  

MSD is set to continue aligning itself with the varied needs of health facilities including modern diagnostics equipment and other medical devices by utilizing different professionals in the health sector. It is expected that the investment in ICT solutions that we are making shall efficiently provide visibility and address all stakeholders' expectations, driving MSD to become more resilient and operationally efficient.

As a major player in the health sector, MSD is reinventing itself with a reformation process to improve its performance and address the emerging needs and expectations of shareholders. The focus areas in the transformation are expected to lead to improved stock availability, enhanced performance,  reduced pricing through strategic sourcing, enhanced financial sustainability, and adherence to compliance requirements.

In the course of its operations, MSD is envisioning to enhance its commercial presence through partnerships in the pharmaceutical supply chain, manufacturing industry, research, and technology to improve the availability of health commodities. All these undertakings are deemed to comprehend its vision of being a “Centre of Excellence for health commodities supply chain in Africa”.

About MSD

Medical Stores Department (MSD) was established by the Act of Parliament No.13 of 1993 as an autonomous department under the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children responsible for developing, maintaining and managing an efficient and cost effective system of procurement, storage and distribution of approved medicines and medical supplies required for use by all public health facilities.
